Xabi Alonso Could Complete Dream Chelsea Signing Thanks to Arteta Decision

According to a report by FootballTransfers on Monday, November 2, 2026, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly considering a move for Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi in 2027 as the Spanish international struggles to secure regular playing time under Mikel Arteta.

Chelsea have invested heavily in strengthening their squad since Alonso's appointment, spending more than €400 million on 11 players during his first transfer window. However, the Blues failed to sign a replacement for Enzo Fernandez before the summer deadline, leaving their midfield as an area that could require further attention.

The Stamford Bridge club are reportedly planning to strengthen that department in January, with Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott among their preferred targets. Chelsea are said to be preparing another offer after having several bids rejected during the summer, although Liverpool are also monitoring the England international.

Zubimendi has now emerged as another possible option for Alonso, particularly because his situation at Arsenal appears to have changed significantly this season.

The 27 year old enjoyed an impressive first campaign in North London, making 57 appearances across all competitions and establishing himself as an important member of Arteta's squad.

However, competition for midfield positions has increased following the emergence of Myles Lewis Skelly and the arrival of Bruno Guimaraes. Declan Rice also remains an important figure in Arteta's plans, leaving Zubimendi with fewer opportunities.

The midfielder is yet to start a Premier League match this season and has reportedly been an unused substitute in three of Arsenal's last four league fixtures, including Sunday's victory over Liverpool.

His reduced involvement could eventually raise questions about his long-term future at the Emirates Stadium if he continues to struggle for regular first-team football.

Alonso's previous relationship with Zubimendi could also influence Chelsea's interest. The pair worked together during the midfielder's development at Real Sociedad's academy and are reportedly still on good terms.

Although Arteta ruled out the possibility of selling the Spanish international during the summer transfer window, Chelsea could test Arsenal's position if they decide to make an approach next year.

Nevertheless, no formal offer or agreement has been reported. Any potential transfer will depend on Zubimendi's role under Arteta, Arsenal's willingness to negotiate and Chelsea's recruitment priorities ahead of the 2027 transfer window.
