Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has praised his team’s professional performance after the Blues secured a 2–0 Premier League victory over Everton on Saturday, October 17, 2026, although the result was overshadowed by a worrying head injury to goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
Pedro Neto scored twice in the second half to secure all three points for Chelsea at Hill Dickinson Stadium, handing Everton their first league defeat of the season.
The victory also lifted Chelsea temporarily into fourth place in the Premier League standings, while the clean sheet ended the club’s lengthy wait for a shutout in the competition.
Alonso expressed satisfaction with Chelsea’s performance, highlighting the team’s defensive organisation, composure and ability to manage the game.
Speaking after the match, the Chelsea manager said:
“Very pleased, first with the win, then with the three points. Many good things happened today. We were solid, professional, and serious. These are the performances we needed to feel and know we could play this way.”
He added that Chelsea appeared in control for much of the encounter, despite facing periods when Everton threatened.
“We looked in control of the game. There were moments we needed to defend but overall the team looked mature,” Alonso said.
According to the manager, Chelsea remained patient and trusted that an opportunity would eventually arrive.
That moment came shortly after the restart when Neto broke the deadlock, giving the visitors the advantage they needed to take control of the contest.
Alonso also stressed the importance of maintaining the defensive standards that produced the clean sheet.
Chelsea had endured a difficult run without shutting out an opponent in the Premier League, making the defensive performance an important development for the team.
However, the manager cautioned against treating one clean sheet as a lasting solution.
“We need to keep working. It’s just one game. One would be very poor — we need to get many more clean sheets,” he said.
He added that Chelsea must demonstrate the same level of professionalism regardless of their opponents or venue.
Neto proved decisive for Chelsea, scoring once immediately after half-time before completing his brace in the closing stages.
The Portuguese winger opened the scoring approximately 43 seconds into the second half, capitalising on a defensive lapse to put the visitors ahead.
Chelsea had struggled to find a breakthrough before the interval, with Everton offering resistance during a competitive first half.
Neto’s goal changed the momentum of the encounter and gave Alonso’s side greater confidence in possession.
The winger then secured the result in the 90th minute after a free-kick situation produced a loose ball inside Everton’s penalty area.
Neto reacted quickly to finish the rebound, sealing a 2–0 victory for the visitors.
Alonso praised the winger’s competitive qualities and attacking contribution.
“He’s always a threat. He has a great competitive level. He can run, he can score goals. He always competes,” the Chelsea manager said.
The performance reinforced Neto’s importance to Chelsea’s attacking plans as the club seeks greater consistency in the Premier League.
The biggest concern for Chelsea was the injury suffered by goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez during the second half.
Martínez sustained a worrying head injury following a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite while attempting to deal with a dangerous free kick.
Both players required medical attention, but Martínez’s condition prompted particular concern among teammates and supporters.
The match was stopped for more than 10 minutes as medical personnel attended to the goalkeeper before he was stretchered off the pitch.
Mike Penders replaced Martínez and made his Premier League debut, helping Chelsea preserve their clean sheet.
Alonso subsequently provided an initial update on the Argentine goalkeeper’s condition.
“As far as I know he left the stadium conscious. Right now he is in the hospital doing precautionary tests, so let’s see,” the manager said.
The statement offered some reassurance but did not establish the full extent of the injury.
Martínez’s condition will depend on the results of his medical examinations and any subsequent assessment by Chelsea’s medical team.
Branthwaite also received treatment following the collision.
Chelsea supporters will be hoping Martínez makes a full recovery, although further medical information is required before any conclusion can be drawn about his availability for upcoming matches.
Chelsea’s victory strengthened their position in the Premier League standings after the latest round of fixtures.
The Blues entered the match with 10 points from six games. The win took them to 13 points from seven matches, moving them temporarily into fourth place.
Everton, meanwhile, remained on 10 points after suffering their first league defeat of the campaign.
The result was particularly significant for Chelsea because it combined three points with a clean sheet, addressing two important objectives for Alonso’s team.
Manchester City, Arsenal and Brighton occupied the leading positions before Saturday’s fixtures, with Chelsea seeking to close the gap on the teams above them.
However, the standings remain subject to change as other Matchweek 7 matches are completed.
Chelsea will look to build on the victory when they host Tottenham Hotspur in their next Premier League fixture on Saturday, October 24.
Alonso will hope his players can reproduce the defensive discipline and attacking efficiency displayed against Everton.
The manager must also assess Martínez’s condition following his hospital examination and determine whether any changes will be necessary in goal.
For Chelsea, the Everton victory represents an important three-point haul. Nevertheless, the immediate priority extends beyond football results as the club awaits further information about its injured goalkeeper.
