Liverpool handed first defeat of Champions League campaign

Liverpool twice surrendered the lead as Fenerbahce inflicted a 3-2 Champions League defeat on Andoni Iraola’s side in Istanbul.

Trey Nyoni put Liverpool ahead after 25 minutes with his first senior goal, finishing from the edge of the box after the visitors had made a promising start.

But the advantage lasted only four minutes, with Mason Greenwood’s deflected free-kick beating Alisson to bring Fenerbahce level.

Iraola turned to his bench after the break and was rewarded when Alexander Isak restored Liverpool’s lead in the 69th minute, finishing from Cody Gakpo’s assist shortly after being introduced.

Archie Brown equalised for Fenerbahce four minutes later before striker Vedat Muriqi headed the hosts in front in the 79th minute to complete the turnaround.

Liverpool were unable to find another response as their winning start to the Champions League campaign came to an end after three successive victories.
