Emiliano Martinez is expected to miss between 45 and 60 days after undergoing surgery for a fractured jaw, dealing Chelsea another injury setback under manager Xabi Alonso.
According to a report by The Athletic on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, Argentine journalist German Garcia Grova of TyC Sports confirmed that the goalkeeper had undergone successful surgery and returned home following a brief hospital stay.
Martinez sustained the injury during Chelsea's 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton on Saturday after colliding with defender Jarrad Branthwaite while defending an in-swinging free-kick in the second half.
Medical staff spent almost 10 minutes assessing the Argentina international before he was stretchered off and taken to hospital in Liverpool. He was subsequently diagnosed with a fractured jaw and concussion.
Although the injury represents a significant setback for Chelsea, there is some positive news, with Martinez having completed surgery successfully and returned home to begin his recovery.
However, his expected absence of 45 to 60 days could rule him out of several important fixtures, including Premier League meetings with Crystal Palace, Liverpool and Manchester City in December.
The initial recovery estimate suggested Martinez could miss around 40 days, potentially returning for the match against Crystal Palace on 2 December. The latest assessment indicates that his absence could extend beyond that date.
Chelsea will now rely on Mike Penders, who made his Premier League debut against Everton and helped the team preserve a clean sheet after replacing Martinez.
The young goalkeeper is expected to retain his place for an extended period, giving him an opportunity to establish himself while the Argentine recovers.
Alonso is unlikely to have many experienced alternatives available, meaning Penders could face considerable pressure as Chelsea seek to maintain their form across domestic competitions.
Martinez's absence is particularly significant given his experience and international pedigree, while the demanding December schedule could test Chelsea's defensive depth.
