Manchester United have reportedly made an initial enquiry about Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez as they explore possible options to strengthen their midfield, although no formal transfer negotiations have taken place.
According to a report by Barca Universal on Friday, October 30, 2026, journalist Matteo Moretto disclosed during an appearance on Radio MARCA that United have also made enquiries about Atletico Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios. The Premier League club are said to be assessing players with similar qualities as they consider potential midfield additions.
The interest in both footballers remains at an early stage. Reports indicate that Manchester United held meetings during their recent visit to Madrid for their Champions League encounter with Atletico, with one of the discussions reportedly involving a possible move for Fermin.
United’s interest comes amid concerns about their midfield options and the situation surrounding captain Bruno Fernandes. However, convincing Barcelona to part with the Spanish midfielder could prove extremely difficult because of his growing importance to the team.
The 23-year-old developed through Barcelona’s La Masia academy before establishing himself in the first team during the 2023/24 campaign under former manager Xavi Hernandez. He has since become an important attacking option for the Catalan side.
Fermin has recorded 12 appearances in all competitions this season, contributing five goals and four assists. His performances have strengthened his position within the squad.
Chelsea previously showed interest in signing him in 2025, but Barcelona were unwilling to consider his departure. The club subsequently extended his contract in January this year, keeping him at Camp Nou until 2031.
The Spanish international has also expressed his strong attachment to Barcelona, describing representing the club as a lifelong dream.
With his long-term contract, importance to the squad and desire to remain at the club, United could face significant difficulties if they decide to pursue his signature.
