According to a report by GOAL on Friday October 16, 2026, Karim Benzema seriously considered returning to Lyon before the proposed move fell through due to contractual complications in Saudi Arabia, according to his former agent, Djaziri.

The former Real Madrid striker was linked with an emotional return to his boyhood club after his situation in Saudi Arabia changed during the summer. Lyon reportedly explored the possibility of bringing back their former academy graduate, with general director Matthieu Louis-Jean confirming the club's interest.

Benzema, 38, developed through Lyon's youth system before leaving for Real Madrid in 2009. He went on to enjoy a trophy-filled career in Spain, establishing himself as one of the world's leading strikers and winning numerous major honours during his 14 seasons at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Speaking to RMC, Djaziri explained that the prospect of returning to Lyon had occupied Benzema's thoughts for a considerable period, but his commitments in Saudi Arabia prevented the reunion from happening.

“It was impossible for him to return this summer because he has a contract that binds him with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” the former agent explained.

“Returning to Lyon, he thought about it for a long time. It's his city, his team, his club.”

A return to Lyon would have represented a special moment for Benzema, allowing him to reconnect with the club where his professional journey began. It would also have offered supporters the opportunity to see one of their most celebrated former players return towards the end of his career.

Djaziri also highlighted how unusual Benzema's career path has been, pointing out that the Frenchman represented only Lyon and Real Madrid before moving to Saudi Arabia in 2023.

“Unlike many players, Karim has only known two clubs,” he added. “It's very rare today to have a linear career like that.”

Despite the reported interest, the contractual obstacle meant that Lyon could not complete the proposed deal during the summer transfer window. Benzema's next step remains uncertain, while the possibility of a future reunion with his boyhood club continues to carry emotional significance.
