Coventry took the lead in the 17th minute through Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, who put the hosts ahead after an attacking start.
Awoniyi doubled Coventry's advantage in the 37th minute with an excellent individual effort. The forward displayed impressive footwork as he dribbled past several Sunderland defenders inside the penalty area before releasing a shot that deflected past goalkeeper Robin Roefs.
His goal gave Coventry a comfortable 2-0 lead at half-time and highlighted his ability to create opportunities under pressure. Awoniyi's movement and physical presence also troubled Sunderland's defence throughout his time on the pitch.
Coventry continued their strong performance after the restart, extending their advantage in the 52nd minute. Jack Rudoni collected a pass from Victor Torp before shooting from the edge of the penalty area. His effort took a deflection and found the net to make it 3-0.
Sunderland eventually pulled one goal back in the 67th minute through Enzo Le Fee, who converted a penalty following a VAR review.
However, the visitors were unable to mount a comeback as Coventry maintained their lead to secure all three points.
Although Awoniyi did not add to his goal, his first-half contribution proved crucial in establishing Coventry's advantage. His dribbling, movement and finishing helped make him one of the standout performers in the match.
The Man of the Match recognition capped an impressive outing for the Nigerian international, who played a key role in Coventry's convincing victory over Sunderland.
