According to a report by the London Evening Standard on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Chelsea have suffered a significant injury setback after captain Reece James underwent minor knee surgery, with the defender reportedly facing an absence of approximately three months. His potential lengthy spell on the sidelines represents a major concern for the club as the Premier League campaign continues.
Chelsea confirmed that James picked up the injury during a training session over the recent international break. The England international has already begun his rehabilitation programme at Cobham, where the club’s medical staff will monitor his progress and oversee his recovery.
The development comes after Chelsea received encouraging fitness updates ahead of their 5-1 victory over Bournemouth. Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo, Marco Palestra and James had initially been considered available, but the captain ultimately missed the match because of his knee problem. He had also been absent for the 3-0 defeat against Brentford after sustaining a hamstring injury.
With James unavailable, Caicedo is set to lead Chelsea against Everton. Manager Xabi Alonso has selected Jordan Henderson to partner the Ecuadorian midfielder, despite having Valentin Barco and Romeo Lavia available as alternative options.
Henderson strengthened his position in the team with an impressive performance against Bournemouth, scoring twice and registering an assist during his home debut. His contribution appears to have earned him another opportunity in Alonso’s starting lineup.
In defence, Josh Acheampong has been preferred to Wesley Fofana, while Neto retains his place on the right flank. Jorrel Hato is expected to feature on the opposite side, replacing Pep Chavarria. Meanwhile, young attackers Estevao and Geovany Quenda are set to begin the encounter among the substitutes after receiving limited playing time during Chelsea’s opening six league fixtures under Alonso.
Chelsea will depend on Joao Pedro, Palmer and Morgan Rogers to provide the attacking quality needed to overcome Everton. However, the club remain without Jamie Gittens, who suffered an ankle injury while representing England’s Under-21 side last month. His recovery is expected to keep him out for several more weeks.
Summer signing Emmanuel Emegha is also unavailable after suffering another setback in training on Thursday. The forward previously dealt with a hamstring problem and is still waiting to make his Chelsea debut.
Chelsea’s expected formation is a 3-4-2-1, with Martinez in goal and Acheampong, Lacroix and Levi Colwill forming the defensive line. Caicedo and Henderson will anchor midfield, while Neto and Hato operate on the flanks. Palmer and Rogers are expected to support Joao Pedro in attack.
