Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders used an unusual technique involving Vaseline to improve his grip during the club’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United.
According to a report by The Chelsea Chronicle on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, the 21-year-old smeared petroleum jelly on his goalpost at Stamford Bridge to help him maintain extra grip on his gloves, particularly when dealing with corners.
The Belgian goalkeeper was reportedly seen rubbing his hands with the substance shortly before claiming a cross from Bruno Fernandes during the match.
Although the method may appear strange, it is an established technique among goalkeepers and has been used by several professionals over the years.
Former Premier League goalkeeper Ben Foster has previously spoken positively about its benefits, having learned the trick from Joe Hart. Hart, in turn, reportedly picked it up from Kasper Schmeichel.
Penders is believed to have learned the technique from Karl-Johan Johnsson, who was Strasbourg's second-choice goalkeeper last season.
The Swedish veteran has also explained the method in a YouTube video that has attracted more than 50,000 views.
Penders has recently been handed an opportunity to establish himself in Chelsea's first team following Emi Martinez's jaw injury.
His introduction has not been without difficulties. He made a costly mistake against Tottenham, punching a corner into his own net during Chelsea's 2-0 defeat.
However, the young goalkeeper responded with encouraging performances against Liverpool in the EFL Cup and Manchester United in the Premier League.
His display against United included an impressive save to tip Bryan Mbeumo's powerful effort onto the crossbar, helping Chelsea secure a clean sheet.
The Blues have struggled to keep opponents from scoring consistently, making Penders' recent contribution particularly valuable.
With Chelsea preparing to face Sunderland on Sunday, 8 November, Xabi Alonso must decide whether to retain the Belgian or bring Martinez back into the starting line-up.
