NEW 0-1 AVL: Match Review And Updated English Premier League Table

According to a report published by BBC Sport on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Aston Villa defeated Newcastle United 1-0 at St. James’ Park to secure another important Premier League victory. Johan Manzambi proved to be the difference between the two sides, scoring the decisive goal and extending Villa's recent run of positive results.

Newcastle began the contest with considerable intensity, putting the visiting team under pressure throughout the first 30 minutes. Nevertheless, the hosts failed to make their early dominance count, as their possession and attacking efforts produced few clear opportunities to trouble Villa's defence.

Aston Villa posed a threat through counterattacks, with Nicolas Jackson having chances to give his side the lead. Despite scoring twice during Villa's 6-0 Champions League triumph over Fenerbahce earlier in the week, the forward could not find the net, as his attempt was stopped by Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.

Villa eventually broke the deadlock in the 36th minute through Manzambi. Joao Gomes sent a well-placed cross towards the far post, where the midfielder found himself with enough space to direct a header past Hornicek and put the visitors 1-0 ahead.

The visitors nearly scored a second goal soon afterwards when Emiliano Buendia unleashed a low shot that struck the base of the post. Newcastle survived the scare and avoided falling further behind before the interval.

However, the home side entered half-time trailing by a goal and continued an unwanted trend by conceding in their 13th consecutive Premier League home fixture. The run established a new negative record for the club.

Newcastle emerged for the second half with renewed attacking ambition, determined to get back into the match. Sven Botman came close to scoring the equaliser with a powerful effort, but Zion Suzuki produced an excellent save, pushing the ball wide to preserve Villa's lead.

Although the hosts improved after the restart, Aston Villa continued to threaten whenever they moved forward. Ross Barkley forced Hornicek into another save with a fierce strike, preventing Newcastle from conceding a second goal.

As the match approached its conclusion, Newcastle intensified their search for an equaliser and pushed more players forward. Yoane Wissa had two promising chances to rescue a point, but neither effort found the target, enabling Villa to protect their narrow advantage until the final whistle.

The result strengthened Aston Villa's recovery in the Premier League following their commanding performance against Fenerbahce in European competition. For Newcastle, the defeat brought an unwanted historical milestone, as they lost consecutive home matches against Aston Villa in the top flight for the first time since 1958.
