COV 3-1 SUN: Super Eagles Star Impresses With Goal In Coventry Victory

According to a report by BBC SPORT on Saturday October 31, 2026, Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi produced an impressive performance for Coventry City as they secured a 3-1 victory over Sunderland in their Premier League meeting on Saturday.

The Nigerian international was among the goalscorers for Frank Lampard's side, helping the club claim three important points at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Awoniyi returned to Coventry's starting lineup after previously missing out following his sending-off in the 5-0 defeat against Brighton in September.

Coventry started the encounter positively and took the lead through Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, who scored in the 17th minute.

Awoniyi then doubled the hosts' advantage in the 37th minute after taking advantage of a defensive mistake from Sunderland.

The striker showed good determination to win possession from Luke O'Nien before driving towards the penalty area and sending his effort past goalkeeper Robin Roefs.

His goal gave Coventry a comfortable 2-0 lead before the half-time break and rewarded Lampard for bringing him back into the starting eleven.

Jack Rudoni extended Coventry's advantage seven minutes into the second half with a deflected effort that made it 3-0.

Sunderland managed to reduce the deficit through Enzo Le Fee, who converted a penalty in the 67th minute. However, the visitors could not find another goal before the final whistle.

The match ended 3-1 in favour of Coventry, giving Lampard's team a valuable victory in their battle to improve their position in the Premier League table.

Awoniyi's contribution was particularly important, as he registered his first Premier League goal for Coventry since joining the club in the summer.

His performance also provided encouragement for the Nigerian striker as he continues to establish himself at his new club.

Coventry will hope Awoniyi can maintain this form and contribute more goals in their upcoming Premier League matches.
