Emi Martinez taken to hospital after collision in Chelsea win

According to a report published by Metro on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez was rushed to hospital after suffering a serious injury during the Blues' 2-0 Premier League win against Everton.

The Argentine international was carried off on a stretcher after a painful collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, leaving teammates, officials and fans deeply concerned about his condition.

The frightening moment occurred during the second half when Martinez came off his line to challenge for a free-kick played into the penalty area. Both players attempted to reach the ball but crashed into each other, leaving them on the ground.

Branthwaite eventually recovered and got back to his feet, but Martinez remained down while medical staff from both teams hurried onto the pitch to assist him.

The Chelsea goalkeeper was administered oxygen as medical personnel carefully assessed his condition. After an extended period of treatment, he was stretchered off and taken to a local hospital for precautionary tests and further evaluation.

Speaking after the game, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso confirmed that Martinez was conscious when he was taken away from the stadium.

"As far as I know, he left the stadium conscious and right now he is in the hospital doing precautionary tests," Alonso said.

Alonso added that Chelsea would need to wait for the results of the medical examinations before establishing the full extent of the injury.

Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders replaced Martinez in the 75th minute, making his first appearance in the Premier League.

Despite the setback, Chelsea went on to claim a 2-0 victory over Everton, collecting three valuable points away from home.

Neto delivered an outstanding performance, scoring twice to secure the win for the visitors. His opening goal came shortly after the break, while his late second strike ensured Chelsea finished the match comfortably ahead.

However, the result was overshadowed by the uncertainty surrounding Martinez's condition, despite Chelsea recording a clean sheet.

Following the match, Neto voiced his concern for the injured goalkeeper and dedicated Chelsea's victory to his teammate while wishing him a speedy recovery.

The club is now waiting for the results of Martinez's hospital examinations before issuing another update on his health.
