Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has single-handedly fired Konyaspor to a 2-0 victory over Gençlerbirliği in the Turkish Süper Lig on Sunday.
The Nigerian international scored both goals to secure all three points for his side.
The Nigerian international opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, finishing from inside the penalty area after Deniz Türüç brought down a cross from the left flank to set him up.
The goal gave Konyaspor the lead heading into the half-time break.
Awaziem doubled Konyaspor’s advantage in the 56th minute, reacting quickest to a loose ball inside the box following a corner kick to complete his brace and put the hosts firmly in control of the encounter.
His second goal gave the hosts a comfortable cushion as they ended their winless run.
The 29-year-old defender’s goals proved decisive as Konyaspor held on to claim a valuable home win at the Konya Büyükşehir Stadium.
The victory was particularly important for Konyaspor, who needed points to improve their position in the league standings.
The victory ended Konyaspor’s three-match winless run in the league and lifted them to 14th place with eight points after nine matches.
Gençlerbirliği, also on eight points, dropped to 16th position after suffering another defeat.
Gençlerbirliği had an opportunity to reduce the deficit in the second half after winning a penalty, but Konyaspor goalkeeper Bahadır Han Güngördü saved Tiago Tongya’s effort to preserve his side’s two-goal advantage.
Awaziem’s brace capped an outstanding performance from the Super Eagles defender, whose contribution at both ends of the pitch helped Konyaspor secure a crucial victory in their Turkish top-flight campaign.
