Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has criticised Jordan Henderson, Moises Caicedo and goalkeeper Mike Penders following Chelsea’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.
According to a report by Football London on Sunday, October 25, 2026, Cole identified weaknesses in Chelsea’s midfield and questioned Penders’ strength after the young goalkeeper made a costly error during the London derby.
The defeat marked Chelsea’s first home loss under head coach Xabi Alonso and continued Tottenham’s impressive performance against their London rivals. Roberto De Zerbi’s side capitalised on Chelsea’s mistakes, with Penders conceding an own goal before Mathys Tel added a second through an individual effort.
Chelsea struggled to create clear opportunities, particularly in the absence of Joao Pedro. Alonso’s decision to introduce Geovany Quenda and move Morgan Rogers into a central attacking role also failed to produce the desired result, as Tottenham gained control of the midfield battle.
Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and James Maddison caused problems for Chelsea’s midfield pairing of Henderson and Caicedo, limiting the hosts’ ability to control possession and dictate the pace of the game.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, Cole questioned the performance of Chelsea’s two central midfielders, suggesting they lacked the balance and intensity they had displayed in previous matches.
Cole said: “Caicedo and Henderson didn’t look quite as balanced or as at it as they have done beforehand.”
The former Chelsea player also criticised Penders following the goalkeeper’s mistake, arguing that he needed to improve physically while acknowledging that he was still developing his game.
“Penders is just not strong enough. This is a young man Penders learning his trade that they think very highly of. He’s just not strong enough,” Cole explained.
Cole also referred to the slippery playing surface and physical contact from Jan Paul van Hecke when discussing the incident. Despite his criticism, he expressed confidence that the young goalkeeper could learn from the experience.
Cole added: “As a young man, he’ll come back stronger.”
Henderson’s physical contribution also came under scrutiny after Tottenham’s Tonali covered 11.7 kilometres, compared with Henderson’s 11.5 kilometres.
The result leaves Alonso with several issues to address, particularly in midfield organisation, defensive coordination and goalkeeper development, as Chelsea seek to recover from the disappointing derby defeat.
