Manchester United and Aston Villa traded four goals apiece to share the points in a 4-4 English Premier League (EPL) classic at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The end-to-end encounter saw Man United stunned by two early goals in each half — Alysson and Nicholas Jackson scoring in the first half, and John McGinn and Leon Goretza again in the second.

Bruno Fernandes and Youri Tielemans pulled Man United level in the first half, and the substitute duo of Joshua Zirkzee and Patrick Dorgu repeated the rescue act in added time of the second half.

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa came out flying, with Alysson’s low shot at the back post beating goalkeeper Senne Lammens through the legs in the first minute, before Jackson doubled the lead in the fourth minute from a rebound.

The Red Devils jolted to life and won a penalty from a foul on Matheus Cunha, with Fernandes slotting home to half the deficit on 16 minutes. Tielemans then scored against his former club with a low shot from the edge of the area to ensure the home side were level at the break.

The second half was de-ja-vu for United who conceded a penalty in the first minute, with McGinn slotting home to restore the visitors’ lead.

Villa then reestablished their two-goal advantage five minutes later through Goretzka who stabbed home at the back post after Man United failed to clear a free kick.

Zirkzee slotted home Dorgu’s low cross in added time before the former headed home the leveler in the dying seconds to claim a precious point that snapped a two-match losing streak.

Man United are stuck on eight points from 10 matches, and are 18th on the EPL table for the first time in the new EPL era. The club without a league win in eight matches continues its worst start to the season in 40 years.

In other matches, Chelsea lost their fourth match of the season in a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland, while Liverpool piled more misery on Crystal Palace with a 3-1 win at Selhurst Park. Brighton, however, moved up to second on the EPL log with a 2-0 win over 10-men Brentford. The Seagulls cut Arsenal’s lead to five points, and have a one-point advantage over third-placed Man City.

RESULTS

  • Manchester United 4-4 Aston Villa
  • Sunderland 1-0 Chelsea
  • Brighton 2-0 Brentford
  • Crystal Palace 1-3 Liverpool
  • Ipswich Town 1-2 Bournemouth
