Mamelodi Sundowns coach Steve Komphela has delivered an intriguing message following the club’s disappointing 3-1 defeat to USM Alger in the CAF Super Cup final, insisting that setbacks should be viewed as part of the journey towards achieving greatness.
Komphela’s remarks, “This is breakfast for Champions”, have attracted attention following an afternoon that turned into a frustrating experience for the Brazilians and their supporters at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Sunday.
The defeat was particularly disappointing for Masandawana, who entered the continental showdown hoping to add another prestigious trophy to their collection after winning the 2025/26 CAF Champions League.
However, USM Alger proved too strong on the day, producing an impressive performance to secure their second CAF Super Cup title.
The Algerian outfit made an explosive start, taking the lead just four minutes into the encounter through Zakaria Draoui, who finished from close range after an excellent attacking move initiated by Ahmed Khaldi.
Sundowns eventually found a response when substitute Iqraam Rayners converted a penalty in the 25th minute to restore parity.
Nevertheless, the visitors regained their advantage before half-time through captain Saadi Radouani, who reacted quickest after an initial header struck the crossbar.
The Brazilians returned for the second half hoping to overturn the deficit, but Khaldi delivered another damaging blow in the 55th minute with a spectacular curling effort from outside the penalty area.
Despite enjoying periods of possession and attempting to fight their way back into the contest, Miguel Cardoso’s charges struggled to break down USM Alger’s disciplined defensive structure.
The result handed the Algerian side a memorable continental triumph while leaving Sundowns with another disappointing cup-final experience.
Komphela’s breakfast-for-champions remark, however, offers an interesting perspective on how setbacks can be approached within a team pursuing sustained success.
Although the statement does not erase the disappointment of losing a major trophy, its message can be interpreted as encouragement to embrace difficult moments, learn from mistakes and maintain the mentality required to compete at the highest level.
For Sundowns, attention will now turn towards recovering from the defeat, addressing the shortcomings exposed during the encounter and restoring confidence among the players and supporters.
The Brazilians remain one of South Africa’s biggest football institutions, and their ability to respond to disappointment will be closely watched.
As the dust settles on the Super Cup final, Komphela’s words provide a reminder that champions are ultimately judged not only by their victories but also by how they respond when things do not go according to plan.
