Man Utd finally binning off hopeless pair in 2027, with terms agreed in first exit

Manchester United are finally ready to part ways with two of their biggest underperformers, and a report claims one of the pair has already agreed terms with Atletico Madrid.

Heading into Sunday’s fixtures, Man Utd sit inside the relegation zone. The Red Devils are an omnishambles, with too many players underperforming, a lame duck manager at the helm, a sporting director who’s unfit for purpose, the owners despised and the fans furious.

In all likelihood, the one who’ll pay for the dire results this season will be Michael Carrick. However, reports are claiming a handful of the most useless players will be jettisoned too.

It’s no secret Man Utd will revamp their rearguard in 2027, with at least three new defenders wanted.

But according to Dean Jones when writing for Flashscore, any arrivals will be offset by requisite exits. United wish to keep their wage bill under control, and as such, additions will coincide with subtractions.

Jones wrote: ‘United’s senior hierarchy have been assessing the current squad and identifying players who could command a worthwhile fee, particularly those who have struggled to establish themselves or are no longer considered central to the team’s plans.’

He added: ‘There is an acknowledgement that United cannot simply keep adding to the wage bill and spending heavily without making progress on outgoings.’

Lisandro Martinez was cited in the piece, and around the same time as that article was published, a separate report claimed he’s already agreed personal terms in principle with Atletico Madrid.

Martinez has cost United goals and points far too often this season, and also heaped pressure on his already under-fire manager when speaking out after the 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid last month.

Martinez does not want Man Utd to trigger the one-year option in his contract, and instead wishes to depart either in January or via free agency next summer.

Diogo Dalot to follow Lisandro Martinez out of Man Utd?

The latest from Football Insider confirmed Martinez wishes to link up with fellow countryman, Diego Simeone, at Atleti where he’d form an all-Argentine centre-back pairing with Cristian Romero.

Furthermore, the FI report stated another ‘sub-par’ defender, Diogo Dalot, could depart in 2027 too.

‘Diogo Dalot could leave Man United next year as clubs across Europe keep tabs on his contract situation,’ the report stated.

‘Dalot, 27, has come under fire for his sub-par performances in a United shirt this season.

‘The Portuguese right-back is out of contract at Old Trafford in 2028 and recently surpassed 250 appearances for the club.

‘United are looking at bolstering their defensive ranks in the next couple of windows after focusing on attacking and midfield additions in recent times.’

Dalot is something of a figure of derision amongst Man Utd fans, with the Portuguese offering nothing going forwards and remaining a liability in defence.
