Portuguese football manager José Mourinho has reaffirmed his belief that no player should enjoy a guaranteed place in his team, insisting that performances on the pitch must determine who gets selected.
The experienced coach, known for his demanding approach to management and tactical discipline, has made it clear that he does not believe in having untouchable players. According to Mourinho, every footballer must consistently prove their value instead of relying on their reputation, popularity or achievements.
“No player is untouchable in my teams. I don’t like this concept of an ‘untouchable’ player,” Mourinho said.
He further explained: “What makes a player untouchable is their performance on the pitch.”
His comments highlight a management philosophy built around competition, accountability and maintaining high standards within the squad. For Mourinho, a player's position should depend on what they contribute to the team rather than their name or status in football.
In modern football, established stars often receive significant attention because of their transfer fees, commercial influence and previous accomplishments. However, Mourinho's stance suggests that none of these factors should automatically secure a player a starting position.
Instead, footballers are expected to demonstrate their quality during training sessions and competitive matches. Players who fail to deliver the required performances could find themselves on the bench, giving teammates an opportunity to prove themselves.
Throughout his managerial career, Mourinho has become known for demanding discipline, tactical awareness and commitment from his players. He has managed several prominent clubs and worked with some of the biggest names in world football.
His approach reflects the belief that individual talent alone is not enough to build a successful team. Consistency, teamwork, dedication and the ability to perform under pressure are also essential qualities.
Mourinho's remarks also underline the importance of accountability in the dressing room. When players understand that their places are not guaranteed, they may be more motivated to work harder and maintain their performance levels.
Managing a squad filled with established stars can be challenging, especially when certain players expect regular selection because of their reputations. Mourinho's philosophy places the responsibility on each individual to justify their inclusion through performances and contributions to the team.
Ultimately, his message is clear: no player is bigger than the team, and selection must be earned on the pitch. Regardless of reputation or status, every footballer must continue proving that they deserve to play.
