Mamelodi Sundowns paid R4 million to sign Gomolemo Kekana from TS Galaxy when the midfielder was just 16 years old, according to Rockets chairman Tim Sukazi.
Sukazi revealed the transfer fee during an interview with Andile Ncube on Metro FM’s Sports Night Amplified, describing it as a record amount for a player of that age. “People don’t know he is from TS Galaxy. We played him at DDC and he was bought by Sundowns for millions. The record price for a 16-year-old transfer fee. It was R4 million,” Sukazi said.
Kekana left Galaxy in 2023 after attracting attention with his performances in the DStv Diski Challenge. Sundowns subsequently integrated him into their development structures, where he progressed to become captain of the reserve team.
The midfielder was expected to develop into a first-team regular at Chloorkop, but opportunities at senior level have proved limited.
Kekana made his senior debut against Magesi FC on August 20, 2025. According to Afrik-Foot, he has made only three first-team appearances since then, raising questions about his long-term future at the club.
One of his most impressive performances came in May 2026, when he produced an encouraging display against German Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig. Sundowns won the match 3-1, with Kekana making an impact after coming on as a substitute.
The midfielder also represented South Africa at the 2025 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, further demonstrating his potential at international level.
However, his future at Sundowns remains uncertain. Reports indicate that contract negotiations have stalled, with Kekana reportedly rejecting a new offer. His current deal is approaching its conclusion, potentially opening the door for a move elsewhere.
For TS Galaxy, Sukazi’s revelation highlights the value of identifying and developing young talent. For Sundowns, the R4 million investment underlines the expectations that accompanied Kekana’s arrival.
The question now is whether the talented midfielder will receive the opportunities needed to fulfil his considerable potential at Chloorkop or pursue a fresh start elsewhere.
