Sundowns Face Super Cup Fitness Concern As Cardoso Delivers Mokoena And Williams Update
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has provided a fresh injury update on Teboho Mokoena and Ronwen Williams as the Brazilians prepare for their crucial CAF Super Cup final against USM Alger on Sunday.
The Tshwane giants are targeting another continental trophy at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, but uncertainty surrounding the availability of two influential players has become a major talking point ahead of the encounter.
Both Mokoena and Williams have missed recent matches, raising concerns about whether they will be fit enough to feature in the showdown. Mokoena has been absent from four consecutive fixtures, while Williams has missed Sundowns’ last three games.
Speaking ahead of the final, Cardoso admitted that the technical team had not yet made final decisions regarding the availability of several injured players. He explained that further discussions with the club’s medical department would determine which players could be considered.
“We cannot risk the health of the players. So there are a lot of decisions I have to make now. I will have to speak with our doctors and understand what options we have ahead,” Cardoso indicated.
The Sundowns coach also stressed that the club would not rush players back simply because of the importance of the occasion. With several demanding fixtures still ahead, the technical team is determined to avoid decisions that could worsen existing injuries.
Mokoena’s situation appears particularly concerning after the midfielder suffered a recurrence of a problem affecting the same leg. Cardoso previously revealed that the Bafana Bafana international returned from national-team duty injured before experiencing another setback during the MTN8 final period.
Williams, meanwhile, has been dealing with a separate fitness issue. Cardoso previously described the goalkeeper’s condition as not being a major injury, although he acknowledged that the shot-stopper had been struggling and needed additional time to return to proper condition.
Despite the uncertainty, Sundowns have continued competing across domestic competitions, with other squad members stepping in during the absence of the experienced duo.
Cardoso also expressed confidence in the players available to him, insisting that the team has options capable of filling important positions when required.
The final decision on Mokoena and Williams will therefore depend on medical assessments, leaving Sundowns supporters waiting for clarity as the team prepares to face USM Alger.
