Rulani Mokwena’s Pyramids FC continued their impressive run of form after extending their winning streak to 11 matches in all competitions with a convincing victory in the Egyptian Premier League.
The Egyptian side secured a 4-1 win over El-Gaish to record their seventh consecutive league victory and strengthen their position at the top of the standings. The result also maintained the momentum they have built under Mokwena as they continue competing in domestic and continental competitions.
Pyramids returned to league action after recording an away victory against South Sudanese side El Merriekh in the CAF Champions League. They carried that confidence into their latest match and immediately put El-Gaish under pressure.
The home side opened the scoring in the sixth minute through Mohanad Lasheen. The midfielder found the back of the net for the second time this season, taking his total goal contributions to four.
Pyramids continued attacking and doubled their advantage in the 15th minute when Mostafa Ziko scored to make it 2-0. The early goals gave Mokwena’s team control of the match, although they were unable to prevent their opponents from getting back into the contest.
El-Gaish reduced the deficit in the 35th minute through Ahmed Tarek, who made it 2-1 and gave the visitors a chance to fight their way back into the game.
Pyramids responded by increasing the pressure as they looked to restore their two-goal advantage. Youssef Obama appeared to have scored, but his effort was ruled out following a lengthy VAR review.
Mokwena’s players continued pushing forward and eventually found another goal with 10 minutes remaining in normal time. Mahmoud Saber scored to extend the lead to 3-1, recording his second goal in four days.
Mahmoud Zalaka then sealed the victory in the 89th minute by converting a penalty to complete the 4-1 scoreline.
The victory leaves Pyramids at the top of the Egyptian Premier League table with a five-point advantage over second-placed Al Ahly, who have played one fewer match.
Mokwena will now turn his attention to the second leg of Pyramids’ CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie against El Merriekh on Saturday evening.
The coach will be hoping his players can maintain their winning form and take another step towards progressing in Africa’s premier club competition.
