Jerry Sikhosana Says Kaizer Chiefs Treated Him Better Than Pirates

Former Orlando Pirates striker Jerry Sikhosana has expressed his disappointment with the club, claiming that he has not received the recognition he believes he deserves for his contribution to the Soweto giants.

The 57-year-old, famously known as ‘Legs of Thunder’, became one of the most memorable players in Pirates’ history after scoring the decisive goal against ASEC Mimosas in the second leg of the 1995 CAF Champions League final. His goal helped the Buccaneers secure their only title in the competition.

Sikhosana joined Pirates from Witbank Aces in 1993 and remained with the club until 1998 before returning for another spell between 2000 and 2001. During his time with the Soweto giants, the former Bafana Bafana striker scored 44 goals in 125 appearances.

Despite his achievements in the black and white jersey, Sikhosana believes the club has failed to treat him as one of its legends since his playing career ended.

Speaking on the Kasi Jam podcast from the Podcast & Chill network, the former striker recalled an occasion when he had to queue with ordinary supporters to buy a ticket for a Pirates match. He compared his experience with the treatment he received from Kaizer Chiefs, Pirates’ biggest rivals.

“When you look at the Pirates jersey with a star, the first impression should be, ‘Thank you Jerry Sikhosana, you gave us a star’,” he said.

Sikhosana explained that he once attended a match in Durban with former goalkeeper Brian Baloyi. During the occasion, he encountered Pirates officials and former players Edward Motale and Lucky Lekgwathi, who were wearing club tracksuits as recognised legends.

However, Sikhosana felt excluded from the group and said he did not receive the same recognition. He also explained that he was looking for a ticket as a former Pirates player but was unable to get the assistance he expected from the club.

Instead, he expressed gratitude to Kaizer Chiefs marketing and commercial director Jessica Motaung, who arranged a VIP suite ticket for him.

“I got special treatment from a rival, which is the same team I used to destroy. Where are the people I served during the derby?” Sikhosana said.

The former striker’s comments highlight his frustration over what he considers a lack of appreciation from Pirates, despite his role in one of the club’s greatest achievements.

Sikhosana is currently involved in football administration and owns Tembisa Hollywood Thunder FC, which competes in the ABC Motsepe League.
