"You Can't Fire A Coach Who Won You The Champions League" Feutmba Sends Clear Message To Sundowns

Sundowns Legend Feutmba Defends Cardoso As Champions League Exit Sparks Debate

Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Roger Feutmba has thrown his support behind head coach Miguel Cardoso, insisting that the Portuguese tactician deserves continued backing despite the club's disappointing failure to reach the CAF Champions League group stages.

Cardoso has faced questions following Sundowns' early elimination from Africa's premier club competition, with the setback raising concerns among supporters about the team's performances and direction under his leadership.

Considering the high expectations at Chloorkop, missing out on the group stages represents a significant disappointment for a club that has established itself as one of Africa's leading football institutions.

However, Feutmba believes dismissing Cardoso would be an inappropriate response, particularly considering the coach's previous achievements with the Tshwane giants.

The former Sundowns star has reminded critics that Cardoso has already guided the club to the biggest prize in African club football, arguing that one disappointing campaign should not automatically erase that achievement.

Speaking about the situation, Feutmba made his position clear.

"You can't fire a coach who won you Champions League," Feutmba stated.

His comments highlight the importance of considering a coach's overall contribution rather than judging his tenure exclusively on one disappointing result.

Cardoso previously guided Sundowns to the 2024/25 CAF Champions League title, defeating Egyptian giants Pyramids FC in the final to secure the club's second continental crown.

That achievement strengthened his reputation at Chloorkop and demonstrated his ability to compete successfully against some of Africa's strongest teams.

Nevertheless, expectations remain exceptionally high at Sundowns, where domestic dominance and continental success are considered important objectives.

The club's supporters naturally expect consistent performances, particularly given the quality and depth available within the squad.

Feutmba's intervention therefore introduces another perspective into the discussion, suggesting that management should consider continuity and the coach's previous accomplishments when assessing his future.

For Sundowns, the immediate challenge will be responding to the disappointment and ensuring that the team remains competitive in its remaining competitions.

Cardoso will also face the responsibility of addressing the concerns surrounding the team's performances while restoring confidence among supporters.

With the season continuing, the Portuguese coach will have opportunities to demonstrate that he can guide the Brazilians through this difficult period.

For now, Feutmba's message is clear: Cardoso's Champions League achievement should remain an important consideration when discussing his position at Chloorkop.
