Sekhukhune United picked up their second win in a row in the Betway Premiership after beating Marumo Gallants 2-1 at home on Saturday. A goal deep in stoppage time settled a tight contest and left Gallants still searching for their first victory of the season.
The home side took the lead in the 30th minute when Oageng Phiri finished calmly to make it 1-0. Gallants improved after the break and looked more dangerous, but they struggled to create clear chances until late in the match. With just over ten minutes left, an own goal by Melusi Buthelezi brought them level at 1-1 and gave them hope of taking something from the game.
Sekhukhune kept pushing and found a winner in the 92nd minute. Substitute Bethuel Muzeu rose highest to head home from close range and seal the three points. The late goal denied Gallants a point they had worked hard to earn in the second half.
The result means Marumo Gallants remain winless after eight rounds and sit near the bottom of the table. They have found the net in recent games but continue to drop points late, which has cost them valuable opportunities to climb away from the relegation zone. For Sekhukhune, the victory lifts them into sixth place and keeps their early season momentum going. They have now won back-to-back matches and shown they can grind out results even when the opposition fights back.
Both teams created chances throughout the afternoon, with possession fairly even and shots shared between the sides. Gallants had a good opportunity to take the lead late on but failed to convert it, while Sekhukhune’s clinical finish in added time proved the difference. The match highlighted the fine margins at this level of the Premiership, where one moment can change the outcome for both the table and a team’s confidence.
Gallants will now look to bounce back quickly as they try to end their winless run. Sekhukhune, meanwhile, can build on the result and aim for a strong finish to the first round of fixtures. The win gives their supporters something positive to hold onto heading into the next set of matches.
