MC Alger reach Champions League groups with stoppage-time winner as Raja Casablanca advance

MC Alger overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit to beat Enugu Rangers 3-0 and secure a place in the group stage of the CAF Champions League with a 3-2 aggregate victory.

The Algerian side completed the comeback on Friday at the Ali La Pointe Stadium in Algiers, with Soufiane Bayazid scoring the decisive goal in the second minute of added time.

The result saw MC Alger repeat a feat achieved 50 years ago, when they also recovered against the same opponents in the semi-finals in 1976.

The hosts had several opportunities to break the deadlock before half-time. Chahreddine Boukholda came close in the 35th minute, while further chances followed in the 44th minute and first-half stoppage time.

MC Alger finally found a way through 13 minutes after the interval. A corner was flicked on by one of their players and Boukholda headed in to give the hosts the lead.

Mohamed Zougrana then saw his headed effort bounce over the crossbar in the 65th minute. Five minutes later, Mohamed Saliou Bangoura missed the chance to bring MC Alger level on aggregate after a penalty had been awarded for a foul on Marwane Khelif.

Bangoura made amends in the 85th minute, scoring to put MC Alger ahead in the tie. Bayazid completed the turnaround by meeting a corner in the 90th minute and sending the Algerian club into the group stage for the third consecutive time.

In the CAF Confederation Cup, Raja Casablanca also secured qualification with a 2-0 home win over El Kanemi Warriors at the Mohammed V Stadium.

The Moroccan club had drawn 2-2 in Nigeria in the first leg last week and progressed after finishing the tie with a 4-2 aggregate victory.

Raja Casablanca had been absent from African inter-club competition for a year, but will now return to the CAF Confederation Cup.

Aymen Barkok opened the scoring with a direct free-kick in the 88th minute. Marian Huja added a second in the fifth minute of stoppage time to confirm the result and send the Green Eagles through.
