Former Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez already eyeing next club after Man City

Manchester City midfielder Enzo Fernandez has once again expressed his determination to return to River Plate at some stage of his career, describing a reunion with his boyhood club as a personal ambition he intends to fulfil before retiring from professional football. His latest comments were reported by Football London on Friday, October 30, 2026.

The Argentine international recently completed a high-profile move from Chelsea to Manchester City in a deal reportedly worth £125 million. His departure from Stamford Bridge followed considerable speculation about his future, with the 25-year-old understood to have been interested in taking on a new challenge and competing for major trophies. City eventually secured his signature during the summer transfer window.

Since arriving at the Etihad Stadium, Fernandez has made 11 appearances across all competitions under Pep Guardiola. He has recorded one goal and one assist while adapting to a different playing environment and the responsibilities expected of him within the manager’s system.

Despite settling into a new chapter in English football, the midfielder has made it clear that his long-term plans include returning to Argentina. His latest remarks underline the importance River Plate continues to hold in his life and career, even after his move to one of Europe’s leading clubs.

Fernandez recently reaffirmed his intention to represent the Buenos Aires side again, insisting that the possibility of returning is something he genuinely wants rather than an idea he has mentioned without serious consideration.

“I want to return to River at some point, I've said it several times. I'm going to return, I'm sure. It's something I really want!” he stated.

The comments were subsequently shared on social media by respected transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, bringing renewed attention to the midfielder’s long-standing connection with River Plate.

The Argentine club played a significant role in Fernandez’s development, having brought him through its academy before he progressed into the senior team. His time at the Monumental Stadium helped establish him as a promising midfielder and strengthened his relationship with the club’s supporters. He also contributed to River’s success in winning a league title during his spell there.

His departure for European football did not appear to weaken that attachment. Fernandez has continued to speak positively about River Plate, and his latest declaration reinforces the emotional connection he maintains with the institution that helped shape his professional career.

For the club’s supporters, his comments offer encouragement that the midfielder could eventually return to wear their colours again. However, there is no indication that such a move is being considered in the immediate future.

Fernandez remains under contract with Manchester City and has only recently begun his spell at the Etihad Stadium. His current focus is therefore expected to remain on establishing himself under Guardiola and contributing to the team’s objectives.

Nevertheless, his remarks suggest that he views a return to River Plate as an important chapter still waiting to be written, potentially after completing his European career.
