Liverpool hit with double injury blow as Andoni Iraola's misery compounded

Liverpool right-back Jeremie Frimpong was forced off just minutes after substituting on the pitch after a muscle injury for the Reds' second-injury related substitution of the contest

Liverpool right-back Jeremie Frimpong was substituted on by coach Andoni Iraola at halftime with the Reds chasing a 1-0 scoreline away to Brentford.

Six minutes later, the Dutch international was forced off with a muscle injury, replaced by Rio Ngumoha as Victor Muñoz switched to right-back. The Reds eventually held on for a 2-1 victory.

Frimpong wasn't the only Liverpool player with injury issues. Dominik Szoboszlai, having returned to the Reds lineup after missing two games with a hamstring injury, was forced off in the 31st minute after re-aggravating his leg problem. Without him, Iraola turned to youngster Trey Nyoni, as Ryan Gravenberch remains out via suspension.

Liverpool trailed at halftime after a stunning Keane Lewis-Potter header from the edge of the 18-yard box flew past Alison in the Reds' net.

A straight red to Brentford midfielder Yehor Yarmoliuk for violent conduct late in the first half gave Liverpool hope. Iraola's side responded, first with a goal from Munoz after a lung-busting run from right-back, a position he was playing due to Frimpong's injury.

The Reds' winner came in the 70th minute courtesy of striker Alexander Isak, who pirouetted brilliantly in the Brentford box and struck home emphatically past goalkeeper Caomihin Kelleher to put his side up 2-1.

Frimpong, who arrived on Merseyside after a €35 million (£29.5 million/$40 million) transfer from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025, suffered a slew of injuries during his debut season.

The 25-year-old played under 2,000 minutes in all competitions and made just 12 Premier League starts amid a laundry list of varying hamstring and muscle injuries.

Victor Munoz

A long-term injury to Frimpong will be a major blow to Liverpool at a fragile time. Former academy starlet Conor Bradley remains on the sidelines with a knee injury.

The Northern Irishman hasn't played since January's fixture against Arsenal, though reports show that he has joined a light training group at the Liverpool Training Center.

Joe Gomez, who can fill in at any position across the back four, missed the start of the 2026/27 campaign after he suffered a muscle injury in a Liverpool preseason fixture against Sunderland.

Gomez subbed on for Munoz in the 79th minute and shifted into a classic right-back position, pairing next to Virgil van Dijk and Jeremy Jacquet at center-back.

Liverpool had chances to kill the game off but settled for the 2-1 away win after Brentford was reduced to nine men (Vitaly Janelt was handed a second yellow in the second minute of injury time).
