According to a report by TeamTalk on Thursday October 29, 2026, Chelsea are reportedly losing patience with two prominent defenders, while Manchester City are preparing to pursue one of the players ahead of the January transfer window.
The Blues have invested heavily in strengthening their defence, bringing in several expensive signings. However, their defensive performances have continued to raise serious concerns about the club’s recruitment and tactical organisation.
Chelsea’s defensive struggles have been evident this season, with the team conceding 15 goals across eight Premier League matches. Their total rises to 19 goals in 11 games when League Cup fixtures are included.
According to reports, Chelsea are considering ending the Stamford Bridge spells of Malo Gusto and Wesley Fofana following disappointing performances and growing concerns about their long-term suitability.
Both defenders struggled during Wednesday’s encounter against Liverpool at Anfield, despite the opposition missing several important attacking players from their starting lineup.
Gusto has experienced inconsistent playing time this season, with Pedro Neto often preferred in the right wing-back position. However, concerns surrounding the Frenchman reportedly extend beyond his recent performances.
Chelsea are consequently exploring the market for another right-back or right wing-back as they consider potential changes to their defensive options.
Manchester City could take advantage of the situation, having reportedly identified Gusto as a potential January signing. Liverpool also showed interest in the defender, submitting a loan proposal on the final day of the previous summer transfer window.
Chelsea have reportedly reduced their original £75 million valuation, while sources suggest a transfer could require at least £50 million. Such a fee could potentially establish a new world record for a right-back, surpassing Achraf Hakimi’s reported £57 million move to Paris Saint-Germain.
However, Manchester City’s spending plans could depend on the outcome of their appeal concerning the Premier League’s financial charges.
Meanwhile, Fofana’s future is also uncertain. Chelsea signed the centre-back from Leicester City for £75 million, including add-ons, but his impact has fallen short of expectations.
Reports suggest Chelsea are assessing defensive upgrades, with Fofana potentially facing the loss of his place by 2027 as the club evaluates its options for improving the back line.
