Taiwo Awoniyi Scores First Premier League Goal for Coventry City in Win Over Sunderland

According to a report by Daily Post on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi opened his Premier League goal account for Coventry City as the Sky Blues defeated Sunderland 3-1 in their league encounter on Saturday.

Coventry City secured their third league victory of the season following an impressive performance at home, with the Nigerian international finding the back of the net in the first half.

Frank Lampard's men started the encounter brightly, dominating the opening exchanges before taking the lead through Tatsuhiro Sakamoto in the 17th minute.

The hosts continued to put pressure on Sunderland and doubled their advantage in the 37th minute when Awoniyi scored his first Premier League goal for the club since joining the Sky Blues.

The 29-year-old forward has now made six league appearances for Coventry City, with his latest contribution marking an important moment in his campaign.

Coventry maintained their dominance after the break, with Jack Rudoni extending their advantage six minutes before the hour mark to put the hosts firmly in control of the contest.

Sunderland struggled to find a way back into the game despite attempting to reduce the deficit. The visitors eventually scored through Omar Alderete deep into stoppage time, but the late effort was insufficient to change the outcome.

The final whistle confirmed a 3-1 victory for Coventry City, handing Lampard's side all three points and their third league win of the season.

Awoniyi's goal will also provide a boost to the Nigerian forward as he continues to establish himself at Coventry City following his arrival at the club.

The former Nottingham Forest striker will now hope to build on his first league goal and maintain his contribution to Coventry's campaign as the season progresses.
