Manchester United have been criticised over their decision to restore Bruno Fernandes to the starting line-up for their Premier League clash against Chelsea, with questions raised about the club's ability to maintain discipline and standards.
According to a report by FootballTransfers on Saturday, 31 October 2026, chief editor Robin Bairner argued that United's decision to bring Fernandes back into the team highlighted how much the club's authority had weakened.
The Portuguese midfielder was named captain and included in Michael Carrick's starting XI for the meeting with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, just days after being left out of the squad that suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.
Fernandes had attracted criticism following United's 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como in Italy, when he questioned the team's approach and suggested the players were simply following the manager's instructions.
His omission against Bournemouth appeared to be a disciplinary response, particularly after supporters applauded Carrick while jeering the players following the final whistle.
However, his immediate return against Chelsea has raised further questions about how the club handles disagreements involving senior players.
Bairner suggested that Fernandes should have been required to publicly address his comments before being welcomed back into the starting team.
The report also referenced former United captain Roy Keane's previous assessment of the midfielder. "Bruno is a talented player but it is not enough," Keane once said.
The criticism extended beyond Fernandes, with Lisandro Martinez also included in the Chelsea squad despite previously expressing concerns about Manchester United's transfer policy.
Bairner argued that the club's inability to enforce consistent standards among its senior players reflected deeper problems at Old Trafford.
He also questioned the influence of senior club officials Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada in the decision to restore Fernandes, although there was no confirmation that they had overruled Carrick.
United have endured a difficult start to the 2026/27 campaign, with their disappointing results increasing pressure on Carrick and the club's leadership.
