According to a report by Metro on Sunday October 18, 2026, Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has provided an encouraging injury update from his hospital bed after suffering a broken jaw during the Blues’ 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton on Saturday.
The Argentine international sustained the injury following a sickening collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Play was stopped for approximately eight minutes as Chelsea’s medical staff attended to Martinez before he was stretchered off the pitch and taken to hospital. The 34-year-old subsequently underwent surgery to repair his broken jaw.
Despite the severity of the incident, Martinez has reassured supporters that his operation was successful and expressed confidence about returning to action within the next few weeks.
“Thanks to everyone for the messages, the operation went well,” Martinez wrote in a message posted on Instagram.
“The most important thing is that we won and with a clean sheet. We’ll be back in a few weeks.”
His update will come as a relief to Chelsea supporters, although his actual return will depend on his recovery and further medical assessments.
Martinez’s absence is likely to provide an opportunity for young goalkeeper Mike Penders, who replaced him during the victory over Everton.
The 21-year-old Belgian joined Chelsea from Genk in a £17 million transfer and spent last season on loan at Strasbourg, making 33 league appearances.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso praised Penders after the match, highlighting his personality, bravery and the club’s confidence in his abilities.
“He’s brave and we have full trust with him. He did well when he came on,” Alonso said.
Chelsea will now hope Penders can step up while Martinez recovers from his injury, with the Blues preparing for their upcoming Premier League clash against Tottenham.
The victory over Everton lifted Chelsea to fourth place in the table and also delivered their first clean sheet of the league campaign, but Martinez’s injury remains a significant concern despite the positive news from hospital.
