According to a report by Barca Universal published on Friday, October 30, 2026, Manchester United have reportedly made contact with Barcelona to gather information about midfielder Fermin Lopez as they assess potential transfer targets ahead of their planned squad rebuilding exercise next summer.
Respected transfer journalist Matteo Moretto disclosed the development during an appearance on Radio MARCA, revealing that United have also considered Atletico Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios as another possible option.
However, neither player has become the subject of formal transfer negotiations, with the English club reportedly still conducting preliminary assessments of their availability and suitability.
Moretto explained that Manchester United are searching for a midfielder who possesses qualities similar to those of Lopez and Barrios. Their current approach suggests that the club is gathering information about possible candidates rather than actively attempting to complete a transfer.
United representatives reportedly held several discussions during their recent visit to Madrid for the Champions League meeting against Atletico Madrid. One of those conversations allegedly involved an enquiry about Lopez's availability at Barcelona.
The interest comes as Manchester United consider strengthening their midfield amid concerns about the team's performances and uncertainty surrounding captain Bruno Fernandes.
Nevertheless, persuading Barcelona to allow Lopez to leave would represent a difficult challenge for the Premier League club. The 23-year-old has gradually become an important part of the Spanish champions' plans, making his potential departure an unlikely possibility.
Lopez developed through Barcelona's famous La Masia academy and attracted considerable attention during the 2023-24 season under former manager Xavi Hernandez. His performances helped him establish a place within the senior squad.
He has continued to demonstrate his attacking qualities this season, recording 12 appearances across all competitions, with five goals and four assists.
The midfielder previously attracted interest from Chelsea in 2025, but Barcelona remained determined to retain him. The club subsequently strengthened their position by extending his contract until 2031 in January this year.
His long-term agreement means Barcelona are under little pressure to consider offers from interested clubs.
Furthermore, Lopez has consistently expressed his attachment to the Catalan giants, describing Barcelona as his dream club and making clear that he would love to spend his entire professional career there.
His strong connection with the club, combined with his contractual situation and growing importance to the team, makes a potential move to Manchester United particularly difficult to complete.
