According to a report by The Punch on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was taken to hospital for precautionary tests after a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during their Premier League match on Saturday.
According to the Associated Press, the incident happened in the second half at Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool. Martinez rushed off his line to meet a cross into the penalty area and collided with Branthwaite.
Medical staff from both teams rushed to attend to the players. Branthwaite continued playing after going through a concussion test.
Martinez, however, received about 10 minutes of treatment on the pitch before he was carried off on a stretcher. Citing TNT Sports, the Associated Press reported that the goalkeeper was being taken to hospital.
Mike Penders came on to replace him and made his Premier League debut for Chelsea.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso gave an update on Martinez's condition in an interview with TNT Sports after the match, as reported by The Guardian.
"As far as I know he left the stadium conscious … right now he is at the hospital doing precautionary tests … so let's see … but this is what I know so far," Alonso said.
The Guardian's live coverage also noted that some Everton supporters booed as Martinez was being carried off.
Despite the scare, Chelsea secured a 2-0 victory. Pedro Neto scored in the 46th and 90th minutes to hand the visitors all three points.
The result lifted Chelsea above Everton in the Premier League table at the time of the match report.
