South African football is celebrating a significant milestone in Major League Soccer (MLS), as players Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Puso Dithejane, and Lyle Foster are gaining recognition while the race for the league's play-offs intensifies.
Mbokazi and Dithejane played for Chicago Fire, who have clinched a play-off spot, while Foster's Houston Dynamo has also secured their place in the next round of the competition. Their achievements signal a positive development for South African footballers abroad and encourage fans at home to engage with the MLS post-season.
The play-offs present a chance for qualifying teams to compete for the league title, with each match filled with pressure as teams strive to extend their seasons and finish strong.
Despite a narrow 1-0 defeat to New England Revolution on October 17, Chicago Fire qualified for the 2026 play-offs. This marks the second consecutive year they have made it to the post-season, reflecting the ongoing progress of head coach Gregg Berhalter's squad.
Chicago had more possession and numerous chances during the match, but New England goalkeeper Matt Turner made six crucial saves to keep them from scoring. Nevertheless, the loss didn't hinder Chicago from achieving their primary goal of reaching the play-offs.
This qualification is particularly encouraging for Mbokazi, who has made a strong impact in his first MLS season after transferring to Chicago from Orlando Pirates. The South African defender has become a key component of the team's defense, gaining acknowledgment for his contributions. Dithejane has also played a role in Chicago's efforts, contributing to the growing presence of South African players in American football.
On the other hand, Houston Dynamo secured their play-off spot after a 2-2 draw with FC Dallas on Saturday. They confirmed their qualification based on other results in the Western Conference, making a return to the post-season after missing out in 2025.
Foster's presence adds another South African international to the mix in the MLS. He joined Houston on loan from Burnley in September 2026, with the club having the option to secure him permanently. He has already netted his first goal for the team and hopes to make a significant impact during the play-offs.
With both Chicago Fire and Houston Dynamo advancing, South African fans will be keenly observing the performances of these three players as the season approaches its critical phase. The MLS Cup play-offs are set to commence on November 18, with the final scheduled for December 18, 2026.
