Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained why his touchline behaviour is different from that of his predecessor, Jose Riveiro, following the Buccaneers’ 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals on Saturday.
The Moroccan tactician guided Pirates to another important victory as they secured their place in the semi-finals of the competition. However, his animated presence on the touchline attracted attention, particularly when compared with the calmer approach often associated with former coach Riveiro.
Ouaddou has now addressed the difference between their personalities, making it clear that he has his own approach to managing matches and communicating with his players.
The former Fulham defender is known for his passionate involvement during games, frequently giving instructions, reacting to situations and encouraging his players throughout the encounter.
His approach reflects his personality as a coach, with the 47-year-old believing that different managers have different ways of expressing themselves during matches.
Unlike Riveiro, who generally maintained a more composed appearance on the touchline, Ouaddou does not hide his emotions when watching his team compete.
The Spaniard enjoyed a successful spell at Orlando Pirates, winning several trophies before leaving the club at the end of last season. His departure opened the door for Ouaddou, who was appointed to continue the club’s progress.
Since taking charge, the Moroccan has gradually established his own identity, with Pirates showing encouraging performances across domestic competitions.
Saturday’s victory over Sekhukhune United was another positive result for the Buccaneers. The team continued its impressive run of form, recording a sixth consecutive victory across all competitions.
The result also demonstrated Pirates’ determination to compete for silverware this season as they continue their campaign in multiple competitions.
Ouaddou will now turn his attention to the next challenges facing the Soweto giants, with the Carling Knockout Cup semi-finals offering another opportunity to move closer to winning a trophy.
