Barcelona Legend Opens up on Surprising Real Madrid Experience as a Teenager

According to a report by Barca Universal on Friday, October 30, 2026, former Barcelona and Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o has recalled how he received no assistance from Real Madrid officials when he arrived in Spain at the age of 16 to join the Spanish club.

The former striker explained that he was left alone at Barajas Airport because no club representative came to welcome him, leaving him frightened and uncertain about how to find his way to the club's facilities.

Eto'o had been identified by Real Madrid scouts as a promising young footballer, and his arrival in Spain represented an important step in his early career. However, the experience was different from what he had expected, as nobody from the club was available to receive him.

Recalling the incident, he said, according to SPORT:

“When I travelled to Spain at the age of 16, no Real Madrid official or representative came to meet me at Barajas Airport,”

The situation became particularly challenging because the teenager was unfamiliar with the country and did not know how to reach his destination.

Fortunately, he encountered an African street cleaner working at the airport, who offered to help him find the club after completing his shift.

Describing how the encounter changed the situation, Eto'o recalled:

“I was a bit scared until I spoke to an African street cleaner who worked there. He told me that if I waited for him to finish his shift, he’d take me to the club. I’m still in touch with him to this day,”

Although his arrival in Spain was difficult, Eto'o eventually continued his football development at Real Madrid. However, he struggled to establish himself in the first team and was sent on loan to Leganes after his first season to gain valuable playing experience.

His career subsequently developed into a successful journey, with the Cameroon international becoming one of Europe's most accomplished forwards. He enjoyed particularly memorable periods at Barcelona and Inter Milan, winning major domestic and international honours.

Despite the disappointing experience he encountered upon arriving in Madrid, Eto'o made it clear that he does not hold a grudge against the Spanish club.

“I harbour no ill will towards Real Madrid,” he added.

The former striker considers the experience an important chapter in his development, highlighting how an unexpected encounter with a stranger helped him navigate a difficult moment early in his professional career.
